Mihai Nistor started his boxing career at the age of 16, under the guidance of coach Nicolae Chipirog. His talent quickly propelled him to the top of Romanian boxing, becoming the national champion for cadets in 2006 and for youth in 2008. In 2010, Nistor won his first senior national championship title.
In 2011, at the European Championship in Ankara, Mihai reached the semifinals, defeating Anthony Joshua, the world youth champion. This remarkable performance earned him a contract with the Kazakh team Astana Arlans, in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) championship. With Astana Arlans, Nistor won the 2012-2013 season and defeated the two-time world champion Clemente Russo.
In 2014, Mihai was recruited into AIBA Pro Boxing (APB), where he continued to achieve impressive results, qualifying for the 2016 Summer Olympics. In the same year, at the European Championship in Samokov, he won a bronze medal, losing the semifinal to Croatian Filip Hrgović.
In September 2015, Mihai became the world champion at super heavyweight, defeating Germany’s Erik Pfeifer by technical KO. Since July 2019, Nistor has transitioned to professional boxing, signing with Golden Boy Promotion, under the leadership of Oscar De La Hoya. Under the guidance of Mervyn Turner, Mihai won all 7 of his professional matches by KO.
